World's first zero-star hotel

A new no-frills hotel has opened in a disused Cold War bunker in Switzerland to cater for travellers looking for somewhere cheap to stay.

The Null Stern hotel in the Swiss town of Sevelen, near Zurich, is offering visitors an unusual room for the night costing just seven euros (£5.80).

Devised by brothers Frank and Patrik Riklin, the idea was initially conceived as an art project but has since received so much interest it is now operating as a full-time hotel.

Guests sleep in dormitory beds in rooms with unpainted walls, share communal showers and, due to a lack of heating, are advised to bring their own hot water bottles.

Each guest is also treated to a pair of ear plugs because the bunker has a noisy ventilation system.

"We want to be the opposite of seven-star palaces in Dubai," Mr Riklin said.

A recent report by the Times claimed Austria's Park Hotel in Linz is one of the quirkiest in the world.

The newspaper noted that guests can chose from one of seven drainpipe rooms on the bank of the River Danube.
