Official: Women need more sleep than men
Women need around 20 minutes more sleep than men, research reveals
Sleep scientists have found that woman need, on average, around 20 minutes more sleep than men due to their tendency to multitask.
"Women tend to do lots at once and so they use more of their actual brain than men do," said Professor Jim Horne, the director of Loughborough University's Sleep Research Centre.
"Because of that, their sleep need is greater."
Professor Horne, author of Sleepfaring: A Journey Through the Science of Sleep, noted that men with complex jobs that involve a lot of decision-making and lateral thinking may also need more sleep than the average male - though probably still not as much as women.
Meanwhile, Arianna Huffington and Cindi Leive, editor of Glamour magazine, are currently in the middle of a month-long challenge to get a full night's sleep.
Sleep is "the next feminist issue", declared Ms Huffington in a recent blog entry on the Huffington Post, stating: "And in order for women to get ahead in this country, we're all going to have to lie down and take a nap."
