New beauty trends are set to emerge in the new year

New beauty trends are set to emerge in the new year

New types of beauty products launched in 2010 will make people feel as well as look good, it has been claimed.

According to research firm Mintel's beauty industry predictions for the new year, "mood beauty" products, which give the user a psychological boost as well as a physical one will become more common.

Such products work by combining ingredients which act on people's neurotransmitters and in the future brands are expected to go beyond simply altering scents and include different textures and temperatures which affect mood.

The firm also predicts that manufacturers will add active mood enhancers to their offerings, with cosmetics claiming to induce positive moods or improve sleep quality.

Other big beauty trends for the coming year include "nu natural" products, with Mintel predicting that claims like "free from" and "sustainable" will appear on products that contain ingredients such as peptides and collagen. Products which claim to have immune system-boosting qualities are also expected to thrive.

"In 2010, we will see more consolidation in the beauty industry and the evolution of old trends, as well as new ones, as consumer confidence returns," commented Mintel Beauty Innovation director Nica Lewis.

Earlier this year, Mintel predicted that anti-ageing and suncare products will prove popular in the coming years, anticipating 20% and 36% growth between 2008 and 2013 respectively.
