Liam Gallagher has become the latest celebrity to add his voice to the campaign to save the UK's dwindling honey bee population.

The former Oasis frontman, 37, was apparently alerted to the plight of the insects after honey helped cure the sore throat that forced his band to pull out of this year's V Festival.

"The bees are vanishing," Gallagher told the Sun. "We've got to save them before they all buzz off. It's important. It's a really worthwhile cause."

Terrible puns aside, the singer's comments were welcomed by the Co-operative, whose new film the Vanishing of the Bees draws attention to the threat new pesticides could pose to the bumbling insects.

According to the filmmakers, bees pollinate one-third of all the food we eat, contributing £200 million a year to the UK economy.

However, around a fifth of the entire British population of the bees was lost last winter and scientists are baffled as to the cause of their untimely demise.

The Vanishing of the Bees is currently showing in cinemas around the UK.
