Competitors at a Japanese golf course have been given eco-friendly transport to help them travel around the site, it has been revealed.

Tone Park Golf Course now offers sports enthusiasts the chance to roam its greens using battery-powered Segways, which have been given new soft wheels to avoid damaging the turf.

In addition, the two-wheeled transporters come with a score-card holder and a fitted bag for players' clubs, reports Reuters.

Yoshiak Tomii, the general manager of the site, told the news provider that the systems would be particularly useful for first-time golfers.

He said: "With novices, their balls tend to curve and fly all over the place so with a Segway these balls are easier to reach than with a traditional golf cart. And that makes golf more fun for them."

Segways have already proved popular in other parts of Asia, as officers and delegates at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing were given the devices for crowd and event management purposes.
