Dream job on offer in New Zealand

A dream job as caretaker of a remote island off the coast of New Zealand is on offer.

The nation's Department of Conservation (DOC) is offering lucky volunteers the opportunity to spend their days looking after a nature reserve on d'Urville Island - an area famed for its beauty and wealth of birds and marine life.

The unpaid job comes with a four-bedroom lakeside house and will involve a mixture of caretaking, handyman and hut warden duties including keeping the island's airstrip clear.

"Ideally we would like someone who is sympathetic to conservation, a handy person - to keep the place going, with the ability to get on with people. Possibly a retired person or a couple," commented DOC community relations programme manager Robin Cox.

Currently, a local resident is taking on the role in the short term after the previous caretakers, Brenda Hatwell and Bernie Coggan, retired after three years of caring for the local area.

So if waking up to the sound of New Zealand bellbirds and weka and spending your days in what has been described as a "slice of paradise" sounds like a dream come true, this may be the job for you.

Another dream job, acting as a caretaker for a small tropical island off the coast of Queensland was advertised last year.

Take action

The six-month position was won by 34-year-old Brit Ben Southall, who beat 350,000 other applicants.

It was announced last month that while his role has officially come to an end, Ben will continue to act as Best Job in the World Queensland Tourism Ambassador.
