In 2007, author Colin Beavan set out on a No Impact Project, turning his New York apartment into an eco-friendly haven.

Now he has published a book, entitled No Impact Man, detailing the trials and tribulations of learning to live off-grid as a sustainable citizen in a city renowned for its disposable culture.

Beavan, along with his reluctant wife and daughter, who was then two, introduced a number of changes in their lives such as giving up driving and TV, composting their waste and shopping for only locally-sourced, seasonal food.

He decided to keep the world up to date with his progress on his blog, which receives around 2,500 visitors every day.

Writing on his blog, Beavan said that climate change is a problem that affects everyone.

"Saving the world can't be left to the country bumpkins. It's an urban problem," he said.

"The fact is that if city dwellers can't learn to live without reducing their ecological footprint then we're in deep trouble because most of the world's population now lives in cities."

No Impact Man has also been turned into a Sundance-selected documentary by independent film producers Laura Gabbert and Eden Wurmfeld.
