Brits to get smart with energy use
Households to save money with a smart meter for energy use
The energy usage of UK homes will soon be transformed according to government plans to roll out smart meters.
A new initiative revealed by the Department of Energy and Climate Change aims to have smart meters installed in every home by 2010 – with the UK leading the way and becoming the first nation globally to install such devices.
Households would be able to monitor their gas and electricity usage, which will help them save money on their bills and also show fiscally the benefits of a more energy-efficient home.
The move has been welcomed by industry representatives, with the Energy Retail Association claiming the smart meters would make a "massive difference" to how everyone across the UK "understands and manages their energy".
Ed Miliband, energy and climate change secretary, described the plans as "another part of our Great British refurb".
He added: "Smart meters will empower all consumers to monitor their own energy use and make reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions as a result. Smart meters will also mean the end of inaccurate bills and estimated meter readings."
The minister stated the nation as a whole needs to "get smarter" when it comes to energy.
