Record-breaking A Level results achieved
The pass rate for A Levels has reached a record 97.5%
Teenagers across the country will have good reason to celebrate today, as this year's A Level results have once again broken records.
The results, released today (20th August), show that one in four A Levels taken this year scored a grade A, up to 26.7% from 25.9% in 2008.
Overall grades also improved for the 27th year in a row with the pass rate hitting 97.5% - a 0.3% increase on last year.
Commenting on the results, higher education minister David Lammy said: "I want to congratulate the hundreds of thousands of students who have worked hard and got the grades they needed to go to university this year."
However, there were a record number of more than 600,000 applications to university this year – up 10% on 2008 – which could leave some students fighting for a place.
The university admissions service Ucas said that 135,114 students will be competing for just 22,000 places through its clearing service, while 371,016 - more than 60% of those who applied - have had their places confirmed.
