President Obama has met with Gordon Brown ahead of the summit

Elected leaders from across the world are gathering in London to consider what can be done to tackle the recession.

The G20 Summit will see politicians from countries including the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada and Germany meet up to discuss the creation of a global plan to restore economic growth.

Gordon Brown and the rest of the leaders must commit to taking action to stabilise financial markets, strengthen the economic system and encourage the sustainable growth of businesses.

Climate change is also set to be addressed at the event, which is US president Barack Obama's first European engagement since his inauguration in January.

However, the summit is not expected to be without incident, with police preparing for a number of protests from environmental bodies and anti-globalisation organisations.

The International Trade Union Confederation has also called for action in five areas, including the creation of a sustainable growth plan and consideration of how to tackle climate change.

Brendan Barber, Trades Union Congress general secretary, said: "We are all calling for a bigger fiscal stimulus through a green new deal, a tough new regulatory system to stop finance threatening global stability ever again and action against inequality both within and between countries."
