Klimaforum09 will include debates, exhibitions, workshops and film viewings
Klimaforum09 kicks off today (7th December) and will see citizens from across the globe gathering to discuss ways of creating a sustainable future.
Organised by a coalition of Danish and international environmental and civil society groups, the people's climate change summit will take place alongside official talks in Copenhagen until 18th December.
The free event will include workshops, debates, climate change films and exhibitions, all highlighting that for action against climate change to be successful different ways of thinking and new cultural values are needed, in addition to new technologies.
Thousands of participants are expected and a special effort has been made to invite people from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Oceania, who are likely to be most affected by climate change.
An opening ceremony will take place this evening from 18:00 local time, with guest speakers including Nnimmo Bassey, chairman from Friends of the Earth International, Henry Saragih, general coordinator for La via Campesina, and Naomi Klein, journalist and author of No Logo and The Shock Doctrine.
Here in the UK, environmental protestors have marked the start of the Copenhagen climate change summit by camping out in London's Trafalgar Square.

More than 100 demonstrators braved the rain and wind over the weekend to attend Climate Camp in a bid to raise awareness of the "false solutions", such as carbon trading, which are being pushed by world leaders at Copenhagen.
