Politicians across the world have paid tribute to US senator Edward Kennedy after it was confirmed that he has died from brain cancer at the age of 77.

The celebrated democrat was the last surviving brother of the political dynasty which included former president John F Kennedy, and had enjoyed a career spanning around half a century.

He is best known for getting behind causes such as healthcare and education in his homeland, although his influence was felt further afield – thanks in particular to his role in the Northern Ireland peace process.

Despite the Chappaquiddick accident scandal putting paid to his presidential hopes during the 1960s, his enduring popularity was reflected when Time magazine named him one of ten best senators in the US just three years ago.

Both sides of the US political spectrum have come together to praise Kennedy's achievements, with former Republican first lady Nancy Reagan describing him as "an ally and a dear friend".

President Barack Obama, whose campaign for the White House was given a boost due to Kennedy's endorsement, said: "An important chapter in our history has come to an end.

"Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States senator of our time."
