Bodies including Greenpeace are taking part in Earth Day

Go green! That's the message from activists across the world who are organising events to highlight environmental issues as part of Earth Day
.

The event, which has taken place on April 22nd since it was first established in 1970, is being used this year to highlight the importance of sustainability and climate change issues in the run-up to a United Nations (UN) summit on the issue in December.

It also marks the start of the new Green Generation Campaign, which is promoting the need to make energy production and transport zero-carbon.

The initiative calls for individuals to take responsibility for their own efforts to become greener, while governments should also work to pull their countries out of the current recession through the creation of green jobs and a sustainable economy.

Environmental organisations are playing their part in Earth Day, including Greenpeace which is launching a new campaign to make three million people climate change activists.

The body hopes to do this through getting the public to sign a petition which will call for world leaders to guarantee their attendance at the UN summit and ask them to do more on securing "the future of humanity".
