General Motors Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre unveils the first lithium-ion battery pack to be mass-made in the US, as it officially goes into production in Brownstown, Michigan.

Made for the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle, the lithium-ion battery holds more energy than the nickel metal hydride cell currently used.

Industry analyst, Lux Research, has predicted the battery will represent a $60 billion global industry before 2015.

Speaking in front of several elected officials including Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Mr Whitacre spoke of his desire to push the US forward in terms of battery cells and packs, calling electric vehicles "the way of the future".
