'E-jeepneys' hit the road
A fleet of battery-powered Jeepneys set off on their maiden voyage in Makati, the financial district of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
The new 12-seater "E-jeepneys" will offer free rides to commuters during rush hours on weekdays. They are financed by the city's government in a bid to improve its green credentials and tackle rising carbon emissions.
The highly decorative Jeepneys are one of the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. Originally made from US military jeeps left over following WWII, they have now become something of a national icon.
