Dramatic scenes unfold in Srinagar, Kashmir, as anti-India protests reach a critical point, marking what looks like the end of a period of relative calm.

The unrest was precipitated by the death of a teenager this week, reportedly at the hands of the police. Local dissatisfaction at violent treatment of citizens by government officials is growing as a result, with more deaths being blamed on heavy-handedness from the authorities.

Commentators are quick to point out that there needs to be a balance between enforced control of protests - such as this curfew entails - and also lenient and understanding treatment of moderate separatists in the region.
