Tens of thousands gathered to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and end of Communist rule across Eastern Europe, on 9th November 2009.

Spectators watched as 1,000 giant dominos – painted with messages of freedom and hope by school children and artists from around the world – were toppled along the former route of the wall. The symbolic act was to reflect how the then Communist governments fell one after another.

Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, led a procession of world leaders - past and present - through Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of German reunification.
