Palm Pre 'the most wanted gadget'

The Pre was unveiled by Palm earlier this year

The new Pre smartphone from Palm has been named this year's must-have gadget in a poll by a leading technology magazine.

It has been revealed that the handset has beaten off competition from the likes of the Sony X-Series Walkman mp3 player and Nokia's N97 phone to reach the number one spot in T3's annual Hot 100 list.

According to the publication, the device is the "first true 'iPhone killer'", as it includes the best features of both that device and the rival BlackBerry Pearl.

The handset, which was originally unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show trade event in Las Vegas in January but has not yet been released in the UK, is the first Palm to include the new webOS platform.

According to the company, the software is designed to bring together key information, including calendars and contact details, in a single logical view.

It also features a slide-out Qwerty keyboard, integrated Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity, a three-megapixel camera and sensors designed to disable the touchscreen when the handset is held to a user's ear.

T3 concluded that the platform is one of several features that has been "thought about, worked on and buffed to a sheen".

It added: "As far as we're concerned, the Pre is the hottest, most mouth-watering piece of gadgetry on the planet today."
