Is survival mind over matter?

Following stories of suvivors rescued from the rubble in Haiti after more than a week with no food or water, we took a look at whether surviving a catastrophe was mind over matter (a will to survive). Survival is said to be 90% psychological. Do you agree?

sorry CM but this is a bit disingenuous - everyone will die eventually in extreme situations without food or water but i get what you're saying.

I agree that survival is mainlu psychological in some circumstances but I believe that it is not a conscious thing. i think often those you wouldn't expect to survive have it in them to do so and vice versa - in other words it isn't always the most obvious candidates.

On the other hand, some of it dpends literally on your survival skills. Clearly someone who lives in a jungle is more likely to survive there than a city slicker.

So no real conclusion here, it really depends on circumstances

yeah exactly angelheart - and also gender perhaps, as women store more fat than men and so are likely to survive for longer perhaps in a starvation situation (or maybe i'm just imagining that would be the case, does anyone know if it is?!)

Hi Fuzz56

your question got me thinking and while I don't have an answer, i found an amusing article in the telegraph about how more american men than british men survived the titanic.can you guess why... they were too polite!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/4297251/Englishmen-on-Titanic-less-likely-to-survive-than-Americans-due-to-good-manners.html

Sadly I admit I find that highly unlikely these days. in fact, if something like the titanic happened today, I can't imagine most of the fellas I spot around London risking their lives to save lil ole me

interesting you should bring up titanic - kate winslet survived probably because she had more flesh on her bones than leo dc lol! women should always be saved first - we are needed to propagate the human race! on a more serious note, how sad that priority was given to the upper classes. thank god that is something that would never happen now.

I definitely think our minds are powerful enough to rule over matter. Some minds are stronger than others. If you have a strong will to survive you will most likely last longer in adverse conditions than someone who does not and gives up hope easily.
