Water bans implemented in San Diego
Water hoses and sprinklers being limited under new mandatory restrictions
Residents in San Diego have been advised on a new way to use water after restrictions were imposed on the Helix District.
The Helix Water District Board of Directors has decided to raise Water Shortage to level two and mandatory restrictions have been placed on locals.
It has launched a new Pick Three Days and Water Ten Minutes scheme, under which residents have been asked to choose the three best days to water their cars and gardens.
On these days, they are being advised to only use water for ten minutes between the months of July and October.
The restrictions apply to hoses, sprinkler systems and watering cans across the Helix area.
In the UK, new pioneering research has been undertaken at Liverpool John Moores University to look into water efficiency.
As part of the work carried out with United Utilities, the university examined low flow showerheads and offered 2,000 homes a household audit on their water usage.
The research has been nominated by the Environment Agency in its Water Efficiency Awards.
Tony Dean, regional director for the agency, told the Liverpool Echo: "It is vital that we all remain committed to reducing our environmental impact, by becoming more water efficient, through this difficult economic period."
