Cash raised by TwitCause this week will benefit honey bees

The plight of the honey bee has been well documented in recent months and now ice-cream maker Haagen-Dazs has stepped in to help raise money for the cause via Twitter.

Its Help the Honey Bee campaign is running on TwitCause, an online application set up by ExperienceProject.com, which uses the popular micro-blogging site to raise cash for good causes.

Normally it simply asks people to make a donation if they feel a particular cause is worthy, however the honey bee campaign has a new twist – sponsor Haagen-Dazs will be making a donation for every person who tweets their support.

The firm will pay $1 (60p) for the first 500 people each day that tweet with the hashtag #HelpHoneyBees until 11th November, with the money raised being shared between a UC Davis research project looking at colony collapse disorder and the ice-cream maker's Honey Bee Haven which teaches people about creating their own bee farms.

"It's an easy thing to do, and they don't have to buy anything or send a letter to anyone," said Tonya Iles, interactive manager for Haagen-Dazs.

TwitCause was launched in August 2009 and chooses a different charity to raise funds for each week.

It currently boasts over 356,000 Twitter followers and has so far raised cash for the Humane Society, Keep A Breast and the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
