To celebrate this year's Prix Pictet, the award for photographs that communicate powerful environmental messages, we've chosen a selection of work from the shortlisted finalists. Based around a broad theme of "earth", the winner of the £60,000 prize will be revealed on 22nd October 2009 at Paris's Passage de Retz by Honorary President of Prix Pictet, Kofi Annan.

Ed Kashi (USA, 1957) Nominated for Curse of the Black Gold: 50 Years of Oil in the Niger Delta, 2004-06

Kashi's powerful work explores the human and environmental costs of oil exploitation in West Africa.
