Sting says indigenous tribes should have more say in Brazil's power station plan
Pop star and campaigner Sting has urged the Brazilian government to consider indigenous tribes before building a huge dam in the Amazon rainforest.
Standing side-by-side with Chief Raoni, a leader of the region's tribes, Sting said those communities most affected by the dam should have an equal say in deciding how and where it is built.
The tribes say the hydro-electric plant, which would dam the Xingu River in Brazil's north, poses a threat to their way of life, while environmentalists add it would kill and displace thousands of native fish.
"The authorities never called a meeting with us, with our leaders to explain this, to have a consultation over Belo Monte," Chief Raoni said.
An earlier campaign by the two men, which saw them travel across the world opposing an earlier plan, resulted in the Brazilian government shelving the proposals, only to come up with the new design, which officials say is more environmentally friendly.
