President Obama has been given a B+ for his energy and global warming measures

Thanks to his efforts to promote clean energy and his work to stop global warming, US president Barack Obama has been given a B+ on his report card by the League of Conservation Voters (LCV).

Focusing solely on energy and global warming measures, the president's grade was based on an analysis of cabinet and other high-level appointments, executive orders and other administration green efforts and legislative actions in Congress.

LCV president Gene Karpinski said: "President Obama has done more to create new clean energy jobs and curb global warming pollution during his first year than any other president has accomplished during an entire term."

Obama has had a number of highlights in his year as president, including granting California's waiver to impose stricter vehicle tailpipe emissions standards and pushing for investment in clean energy, LCV noted.

However, the Center for Biological Diversity has given the president a lowly C for his handling of endangered species, climate, energy, public lands and oceans during his first year in office.

The group said that, while the Obama administration has not shown an ideological opposition to the protection of the environment, it had "fallen far short of delivering the promised change in overall environmental policies".

Take action

But Obama is happy with his performance in 2009, giving himself a B+ for his first year in the White House on the Oprah Winfrey show in December.

He told the chat show host that passing the healthcare reform would boost his grade to an A-, but noted that until there was less unemployment, he would not be able to give himself an A+.
