Superheroes hit by recession
Spider-Man is set to lose his job due to the recession
Despite having a range of abilities that humans can only dream of, it appears that not even comic book heroes can save themselves from the recession.
While many believe the fictional worlds created by the likes of Marvel are designed to allow readers to escape from current events, it appears that writers are planning to bring a dose of reality to their stories.
According to New York News, Iron Man's alter-ego Tony Stark is expected to see the assets of his major technology company frozen in an upcoming issue.
In addition, Peter Parker's adventures as Spider-Man will not shelter him from job cuts, as he is set to leave his position as a freelance web designer and take up a role at McDonald's.
Brian Michael Bendis, a writer for Marvel's New Avengers and Ultimate Spider-Man series of comics, told the newspaper: "The economy is going to hit people like Peter Parker the hardest. Web fluid doesn't grow on trees, you know."
Despite their financial struggles, it appears both Stark and Parker remain very popular in the real world.
Work on a second Iron Man film is set to begin soon, while a musical based on the adventures of Spider-Man and featuring music from U2's Bono and The Edge is set to open on Broadway next year.
