Kevin Spacey is to star in Inherit the Wind at London's Old Vic

Kevin Spacey has been announced as the star of a new adaptation of Jerome Lawrence and Robert E Lee's thought-provoking play Inherit the Wind.

The Hollywood star, who is best known for his Oscar-winning turn in American Beauty but is currently the artistic director of London's Old Vic theatre, will take to the stage in the drama from October 1st.

Based on real events, the play tells the story of the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial, a court battle that ensued after a schoolteacher was accused of violating Tennessee state law by teaching children about Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

The production is the latest in a series of events held this year to mark the 200th anniversary of the celebrated naturalist's birth.

Spacey will be joined onstage at the Old Vic in the drama - which was first performed on Broadway in 1955 - by David Troughton.

Discussing his own involvement in the play, director Trevor Nunn said he last came across the play while a student.

He added: "I feel unusually fulfilled, more than a generation later, to be able to direct Kevin Spacey and David Troughton in this Titanic clash of ideas."
