Facebook users 'to be hypnotised'
Chris Hughes plans on using Facebook and Twitter to put social media users in a hypnotic trance.
More than 6,000 social media users will be put in a trance tonight (4th January), according to hypnotist Chris Hughes.
The 34-year-old, who is hoping to hypnotise Facebook and Twitter users, said that those who succumb to the trance will not be able to get up from their chairs, while their eyelids and hands will also be stuck together.
Called SocialTrance, the event coincides with World Hypnotism Day and is set to begin at 8.30pm today.
Social media users, who are at least 18 years old and in "normal physical and mental health", are being encouraged to sign up for the event, which Mr Hughes hopes will set a world record for the largest online hypnosis session via a webcast.
Speaking to the Independent about the event, Mr Hughes said: "Social media is all about bringing people together, so it is a perfect way to help educate the world about hypnosis."
The hypnotist added that people from 85 countries, including Peru, Israel, Italy, the UK and the US, have registered to take part in the event.
Take action
Hughes, who has been a practicing hypnotist and hypnotherapist for over five years, claims to specialise in helping people stop smoking and lose weight.
Last year, on TV show The Events, magician and illusionist Derren Brown attempted to use subliminal messaging to render viewers at home immobile, with one in four participants claiming they felt that they were stuck to their furniture.
