About us

What is Sideways News?

Sideways News is a news website dedicated to providing "fresh perspectives on things that matter".

We live at an exciting time in human history. Yes, we’re facing big challenges in the 21st century, but there’s never been a better time to make a difference. Change is needed. And it’s our ambition to play a leading role in facilitating this – by informing, inspiring and enabling our readers to make a positive difference to their world.

What you’ll find on Sideways News are inspiring and stimulating news and views, from around the world, on today’s issues.

What you won’t find here is sensationalist reporting of trivial issues or news that simply highlights problems, rather than focusing on a search for solutions.

Who is Sideways News aimed at?

Our audience is the large and growing group of "Cultural Creatives" (of whom there are over 80m in Europe and 50m in the US).

So what is a Cultural Creative? Here’s how to tell if you’re one. Are you:

  • Open-minded and enquiring about the world?
  • Concerned about the environment and sustainability?
  • Interested in global issues (eg. climate change, poverty, overpopulation)?
  • A consumer with a green/social/ethical conscience?
  • Concerned about social justice and human rights?
  • An active member of a network or community?
  • Interested in personal development and in helping others?
  • Keen to take action on the issues you care about?
  • Want to make a positive difference to the world?

If you answered "yes" to most of these questions, then you’re probably a Cultural Creative! And Sideways News is probably the place for you.

What’s different about Sideways News?
  • A fresh take on the news – a "Sideways perspective". We don’t just highlight problems, we focus on a search for solutions to today’s big issues.
  • We’re particularly interested in the big issues facing the world today – see our 21st Century Challenges for more details.
  • We strongly believe individual actions do make a difference. On most Sideways News articles you’ll find a "Take action" box, which will give suggestions as to what you can do next, if you’ve been inspired by what you’ve read.
  • Uniquely amongst other news websites, we want Sideways News to become the springboard for our readers to take action on issues they care about. We see this as “news-into-action”. We’ve set up a specific section on our site – Take action – just for this.
Our ethos
  • We’re new and we’re independent. Politically, we’re neither left- nor right-wing.
  • We do have an agenda, but it’s very simple:
    - To inspire people – with our content.
    - To enable people – to take things further on issues they care about.
    - To connect people – to like-minded individuals who feel passionately about the same issues within the Sideways Community.
